Abstract
Amoxicillin was used to treat uncomplicated gonorrhea in 48 males and females. Males received 500 mg every 8 hr (total, three doses), and females received 250 mg every 8 hr (total, 12 doses). A matched group of patients was treated with 4.8 million units of procaine penicillin and 1 g of probenecid in a single dose. All patients had follow-up cultures. The overall cure rate was 94% after amoxicillin treatment and 96% for after procaine penicillin treatment. There were no statistical differences between the cure rate in males and that in females. The minimal inhibitory concentration of amoxicillin was <0.3 µg/ml for 48% of the gonococcal isolates. Two patients treated with amoxicillin developed minor skin rashes. There was no statistical difference between cure rates with the multipledose schedule of amoxicillin and the single-injection program of procaine penicillin and probenecid. However, considering the general unreliability of these patients, a single-dose program seems preferable. Keywords
