CHANGES IN PULMONARY FUNCTION BEFORE AND AFTER PNEUMONECTOMY FOR PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

Abstract
The changes in pulmonary function effected by the remal of 1 lung in each of 54 patients with tuberculosis were studied. The results showed that the effects vary significantly depending on whether the lung removed can be classified as "aerated" or "destroyed." The least change occurred in those with destroyed lung. The removal of diseased lung improved the O2 saturation in all cases studied. Bronchospirometric findings suggested that the diseased lungs which were removed, even though showing some aeration on roentgenogram, had contributed very little to the total pulmonary function.
