Abstract
Examined the role of conditioned factors in instrumental responding. 22 naive Sprague-Dawley albino rats were 1st trained to bar press, then presented with noncontingent rewards at fixed intervals, and finally tested for transfer. In the 2nd stage, activity was recorded as an index of conditioned motivation. Results showed acquisition of an activity scallop during Pavlovian training, and sizable transfer to an instrumental response. The amount of scalloping on the activity measure correlated with the size of the transfer effect. Results support 2-process theory, and point to some possible extensions of theory to include interactions between the hypothesized 2 factors.
