Abstract
An optimal linear regulator calls for feedback of all the state variables in the plant. When some of the state variables are not measurable, an observer can be constructed to estimate the missing state variables. The use of an observer in an optimal linear regulator is shown and it is compared with the optimal regulator with incomplete state feedback. The improvement, in performance by using an observer is demonstrated. Keywords
