Abstract
Idioms, culturally saturated symbols, often cause communication breakdowns between people from different lifeworlds. Based on Bateson's theory of logical types and double‐descriptive principle, and Bakhtin's dialogical translinguistics, this essay proposes a performance‐oriented, processual method to attack idiom problems. New forms of communication, including linguistic and comparative‐relational metatalk, are introduced.
