Experimental Arterial Thrombus Prevention and Renal Function in Sheep after Infusion with Low Molecular Weight Dextran and Dextran 70,000

Abstract
Both Dextran 70,000 and LMWD [Low Molecular Weight Dextran] have equivalent antithrombotic effect in the femoral arteries of sheep subjected to electric current. Heparin is superior to the Dextrans in prevention of thrombus formation. The thrombi formed after Dextran infusion are not propagated and are weakly attached to the vessel wall. A specific stain demonstrates the presence of LMWD in the kidneys of dehydrated sheep. Dextran 70,000 infused sheep do not have such deposits. Renal function was unaltered in all Dextran treated sheep. Renal failure may occur when LMWD is used in hypovolemic patients. Dextran 70,000 provides an effective substitute without this danger.
