DESCENDING BRAIN STEM CONNECTIONS CONTROLLING SHIVERING IN CAT

Abstract
Bilateral lesions were made in the brainstem and spinal cord of more than 50 cats and their shivering response determined before and after the operation. Lesions which abolished shivering defined a fairly discrete shivering "pathway" located within the diffuse descending system of hypothalamic efferents. Bilateral section of the pyramids did not abolish shivering. Bilateral lesions of the lateral white columns of the thoracic cord abolished shivering in the hind limbs.
