Essential factors in high-duty FLC matrix display

Abstract
Two important features in high-duty FLC matrix driving, bistability and switchablity, are studied. Bistability is destroyed in certain kinds of alignment because of the ionic impurity accumulation at liquid crystal surfaces. Control of surface molecular configuration is crucial to avoid this monostablization. Unswitchable alignment appears if the liquid crystal has a large spontaneous polarization. Relation between this anomaly and electrical properties of subutrates is also discussed. The possibility of high-duty multiplex driving has been confirmed in display panels with 400 scanning lines.
