Abstract
Diurnal variation of DNA synthesis in cells of the alveolar wall and intrapulmonary airway epithelium of neonatal mice was studied by autoradiography for the 3 wk after birth. Both alveolar wall and airway epithelial cells exhibited greater DNA synthesis at night than during the day. Peak DNA-synthetic activity occurred nocturnally on postnatal days 4, 8 and 13 in both airway epithelium and alveolar wall cells. A morning peak was observed on day 8. Airway epithelial cells were labeled more frequently than were alveolar wall cells.
