Abstract
Certain existing NLCs can have optical-field-induced first-order Freedericksz transitions and hence can exhibit intrinsic optical bistability. With a low additional dc field, the intrinsic optical bistability can always be suppressed or enhanced, and hence can be seen in all nematics. With an additional optical field, the otherwise second-order dc-field-induced Freedericksz transition can also become first order and bistable. Keywords
