Abstract
The article is written in response to Mårten Söder's (Volume 4, Number 2, June 1989) paper ‘Disability as a social construct: the labelling approach revisited’. It examines and questions his assumptions and arguments and the evidence he provides for them. It attempts to uncover the nature of ‘non‐labelling policies’, and takes issue with his attribution of a ‘non‐labelling ideology’ to proponents of integration policies as well as his assertion that integrationists deny the significance of disability. It traces the source of some of his errors to a particular ideology of science and a failure to come to terms with his own commitments. The article is presented as both a critique and a positive contribution to debate. Keywords
