Abstract
The topography of the glands in the anterior part of the human nasal cavity was studies in OSO4 stained whole mounts and in ordinary sections. Two groups of glands were discernible: smaller ones, which were scattered throughout the mucous membrane and larger ones, which opened into the vestibule. The former had their acini situated at a rather superficial level and were provided with ducts of 70 to 80 [mu] in diameter which proceeded straight up to the surface. The larger ones, called the anterior nasal glands, drained acini situated more deeply in the lamina proprla and discharged their secretion into the region of the internal ostium. Here were found 50 to 80 openings on the septum as well as on the limen nasi. They lead on to ducts 3 to 20 mm in length proceeding backwards from this site with the largest draining acini accumulated in the tuberculum septi. The possible influence of the glands on the process of humldiflcation and olfactlon is discussed. Keywords
