How Heavy are the Quarks?

Abstract

We consider a simple model of mesons as Coulombic bound states of quark-antiquark pairs confined in a box. A fit to the meson spectra and decay rates suggests that

m_{u} = m_{d} \approx 0.3

GeV,

m_{s} \approx 0.4

GeV, and

m_{c} \approx 1.4

GeV. We also predict new meson systematics and metastable charmed baryons.
