Lipreading Performance and the Rate of the Speaker

Abstract
From 94 males and females from the Kentucky School for the Deaf, the 24 subjects with highest scores on the basis of a screening film of lipreading and 24 with lowest scores were selected for experiment. Members of each subgroup of 24 were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental groups. Each group thus consisted of 6 good and 6 poor lipreaders. A film version of a sentence lipreading test was viewed at normal, 2/3, 1/2, and 1/3 normal rate. Results showed no significant difference among the 4 rates or between good and poor lipreaders.
