Abstract
It is not usually possible to reconstruct from original documents a large data base that has been in existence for some time, but it must be possible to repair it after an error has occurred. This can only be done if a copy of all information in the data base is kept in some safe place. The paper discusses the use for this purpose of periodical dumps and of various forms of journal. The important role played by the data base manager is emphasised. Keywords
