Critical review of the literature of establishing a zero reference level in audiometric work. Historical basis of the present American Standard, the new British Standard, the Wisconsin State Fair Survey, the influence of masking noise, age and previous noise exposure and a description of the physical steps toward establishing a zero reference level.Keywords
