Abstract
A 6-inch Ekman dredge can be used successfully to collect ostracodes from ponds, lakes, and streams. Standard 20- and 60-mesh sieves are used to wash and separate the bulk of sediment and plant debris from the ostracodes. Acetone is then used to float and thus concentrate the ostracode carapaces. In preparing a key for use in the identification of 77 Canadian species, morphological parameters such as size, shape, and carapace outline have been found to be very useful for preliminary identifications.
