Melkersson - Rosenthal Syndrome

Abstract
The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is an unusual condition which, except for a few isolated reports in otolaryngologic journals, is rarely described in American medical literature. It comprises a triad consisting of recurrent facial paralysis, intermittent facial edema which subsequently becomes permanent, and lingua plicata. The only case of this condition in an American dermatologic journal was reported by Klaus and Brunsting,1 but many more reports have appeared in European journals. Four cases were presented at the Eleventh International Congress of Dermatology.2 We have observed 2 patients having this condition and believe this report may further an awareness of the syndrome. Case Reports Case 1.— A 63-year-old woman had swelling of the lower lip for the past 6 months, and although the severity had fluctuated, no significant improvement had occurred.
