Characteristics and Measurement of an Organizational Typology.

Abstract
An organizational typology based on three adaptive strategies is described, and studies designed to test the validity of the associated theory and of its predictions, for both manufacturing and retailing firms, are reported. In particular, steps taken to develop the organization typology questionnaire are detailed, factor structure of the questionnaire is examined, and correlations of factor scores with objective indices of operation and with owner-manager characteristics are presented. The results of the analyses are generally supportive of the validity of the typology.
