The strong interaction shift in pionic 3He

Abstract
We calculate the multiple scattering contribution to the strong interaction shift in the π−3He atomic 1s level. The result is in reasonable agreement with recent measurements. However, it is also noticed that this particular system is very sensitive to the inclusion of absorptive effects. In fact, when the dispersive effect of absorption is included in the usual way, only one (relatively old) set of πN scattering lengths gives a result near the data. We stress the importance of a definitive measurement in both this system and the π−d system to clarify matters.
