Characteristics of EGS and DEGS Polyesters in Packed GC Columns

Abstract
The vast majority of gas chromatographers have the misconception that EGS and DEGS packings must be conditioned merely to remove volatile components. This paper dispels that notion. GC work is done on superpolyesters (as defined by Carothers in 1930) and not the moderate molecular weight polymer which one initially coats on a support. Each in situ conditioned column represents a distinct batch of superpolyester coated packing. The formation of superpolyesters is accompanied by massive loss of phase. Phase loss during conditioning and use is not uniform within the column but is greatest at the inlet end and least at the outlet.
