Abstract
We discuss the generation of dc magnetic fields due to the resonant excitation of plasma waves by an obliquely incident, plane-polarized laser beam. We show that the averaged forces on the electrons due to the plasma waves produce magnetic fields perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Megagauss field levels may be reached. Computer simulations verify our theoretical predictions. Keywords
