Abstract
The variation in the weights of young mice was traced to the following: prenatal maternal effects, postnatal maternal effects (lactation?), inherent growth potential (genotype of young), and non-maternal environmental effects ("error"). Natural variations in these 4 factors contributed approximately equally to the variation in the weights of single young from different litters; but the contribution of postnatal maternal effects could be raised to 32%, of the variation on total litters weight, and the total maternal contribution to 73%, by increasing litter size to 8 young. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
