Mitral Annulus Calcification

Abstract
Fourteen cases are presented of calcification of the mitral annulus, a disease common in old age, which is related to arteriosclerotic heart disease and only rarely to rheumatic heart disease. It is visualized radiographically as a homogeneous C, U, or J calcification occupying the posterior third of the heart shadow. The incidence is much higher in women. Mitral insufficiency, and more rarely mitral stenosis, may be sequelae of the anatomic changes present, while physiologically bundle-branch block may be found.
