Abstract
Breeding of long rough dabs caught in the Clyde between Oct. 1953 and April 1955 was studied in relation to their condition, the index being the weight of a 20 cm fish deduced from the length-weight relationship. The condition of all fish was highest in Nov. and lowest at the spawning time in March and April; the range being greatest in the mature fish. Fish weight was proportional to length at a power which varied from 3.0 in July to 3.4 in Feb., suggesting that small fish lose and gain weight faster than large ones. Maturity was more closely linked with age than with length, though at all ages some were immature. Spawning was at 60-90 m the older and larger fish spawn 1st. Eggs were planktonic for 3-4 weeks; larvae metamorphosed at 15 mm, and took to the bottom at 25 mm. Fecundity was estimated from 4 sub-samples of dilution, 1/200 of the eggs from each of 119 fish. Egg numbers varied from 25,000 for a fish of 15 cm to over 250,000 for a 30 cm fish. The relation of fecundity to age, length, weight and gonad weight of the fish was studied statistically. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
