Abstract
The fluorescence spectra of REOCl:Tb3+ powder samples were recorded at 300, 77, and 4 K. The assignment of the different 5D3,4 → 7F0–6 transitions between 400 and 730 nm allowed determination of the Stark level sequences of the 7F0–6 levels. The sets of five nonzero Bkq crystal field parameters for the C4v symmetry reproduce the experimental energy level schemes within a rms deviation of 7–8 cm−1. The high ‖B20‖ values indicate the presence of a strong crystal field in REOCl compounds, especially in LaOCl. The evolution of the Bkq parameters in the REOCl:RE3+ series as a function of both the host cation and the doping ion (Eu3+ and Tb3+) is discussed. Keywords
