Abstract
As a part of a series of psychosomatic studies on stutterers, the above experimental studies were undertaken to clarify the nature of stuttering. Taking PGR [psychogalvanic reflex] as the physiological indicator the clinical significance of the use of PGR was clarified. The therapeutic effect, of Astyn (2-Ethyl-cis-crotonylurea, tranquilizer) on stutterers was also examined. The results obtained were as follows: PGR reflects the anxiety-tension of stutterers, and systematically alters it. It can serve as an indicator of the intensity of the stuttering, as well as an evaluation of therapeutic effect. Astyn is efficacious for stutterers. Placebo when used with suggestion, especially with adult stutterers, is also particularly effective, as use of PGR shows. These findings offer an important key for examining the nature of stuttering as well as for evaluating the therapeutic effect.
