Arteritis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract
ALTHOUGH systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been recently classified among the "collagen vascular disorders" which in turn belong to the group of "widespread inflammatory connective tissue diseases, cause unknown," 1 we have been impressed by the paucity of reports in the literature dealing with the vascular manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus.2-12 Only the renal (arteriolar or glomerular) lesions have been dealt with extensively in previous publications.13-15 During the past year we have had the opportunity to study six cases of SLE in which disseminated arteritis was present, and it is our impression that these vascular manifestations have a diagnostic, a therapeutic, and a prognostic significance. This report deals with the clinical study and postmortem findings of these patients with diffuse arterial lesions.
