Abstract
Touristical attractions special events and urban regeneration in Northern England Since the late 1970s central government and local authorities have sought to use tourism to help regenerate urban areas, particularly in Northern England. Two ways of trying to achieve this aim have been the development of tourist attractions and the organisation of special events. Some of these have been successful while others have failed, for a variety of reasons. Using a number of examples from Northern England, the paper looks at some of the key issues in the use of tourism as an urban regeneration tool. It concludes by suggesting ways in which tourist attractions and special events could make a greater contribution towards urban regeneration in Northern England. Keywords
