Abstract
The use of poetry as a therapeutic tool in the initial stages of human alcoholism treatment is examined. Poetry can be used in individual, group or family therapy contexts. Like art, music and psychodrama, poetry can be useful in breaking down defenses, facilitating group interaction and stimulating self-discharge. Some methods for using poetry in alcoholism treatment are suggested, and case histories illustrating its use in a specific treatment program are given.
