Abstract
In the first of a three-part series, Marjorie Gott and Martin O'Brien assert that much health promotion practice is irrationally based; a deeper understanding of what ‘health’ means to individual people is necessary before nurses can hope to provide an effective service. Despite wide endorsement by leading professional bodies, nursing’s response to the call to leadership of the health promotion movement has been erratic. Flawed reasoning and chaotic policy formulation in relation to cultivating healthy lifestyles have led to disillusionment in practice and inadequate provision in education. The authors stress the importance of nurses becoming aware of the broader contextual focus of people’s lives, while remaining sensitive to the vagaries which elicit change in behaviour. Keywords
