Abstract
In a coupled-channels approach it is shown that the effect of NN bound states below the NN threshold can drastically reduce the imaginary component in the optical potential needed to fit NN scattering data. This results in a similar reduction of the widths of NN states. However, these calculated widths are still much larger than those suggested by experiment. Reasons for this difference are discussed. Keywords
