Influence of X Irradiation on Potassium Retentivity by Escherichia coli.

Abstract
The effect of X-irradiation on the ability of E. coli to retain K was studied. A comparison was made between strain B and its radiation-resistant mutant, strain B/r. Stationary-phase cells, harvested from an inorganic salts-glucose medium were used, and efflux of K was measured as a function of time following irradiation. The efflux of K was followed at a set value of pH, by use of ammonium phosphate buffer. Both strains of E. coli showed increased efflux of K as a result of irradiation, but strain B, the more radiosensitive strain, is much more susceptible to this damage than is its radiation-resistant mutant B/r.
