Polarization rotation via a monoclinic phase in the piezoelectric 92%PbZn1/3Nb2/3-8%PbTiO3

Abstract
High and ultra-high piezoelectric response in perovskites has recently been associated with the rotation of the polarization under an applied electric field, contrary to the classical understanding of piezoelectricity as induced polarization parallel to the field. We present the first evidence of the existence of a rotation path for the polar axis of PbZn1/3Nb2/3-PbTiO3(PZN-PT) under an electric field, as inferred from first principles calculations (Fu and Cohen, Nature 403, 281 (2000)), showing that the phase induced by the electric field is monoclinic, and not tetragonal, as believed.
