Abstract
An apparatus which has been developed for measuring hardness at very high temperatures by mutual indentation techniques is described. This method overcomes the problem of finding materials which would be sufficiently rigid and chemically stable for use as indentors in the conventional quasi-static methods of indentation hardness testing. By this means one is able to measure the hardness of the hardest materials up to their melting points, and some typical results are presented for various refractory materials. Keywords
