Damage and Failure in Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Resin

Abstract
A model of failure in simple carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin plate specimens is proposed which, it has been shown, can be applied to certain filament wound structures to calculate minimum expected lifetimes under steady loading conditions. The theoretical approach is based on the fiber-bundle-chain, weakest-link model, which has been extended to include the effects of the viscoelastic properties of the matrix. The use of the acoustic emission technique has allowed the development of internal damage to be monitored during steady loading conditions, and these experimental results were seen to support the theoretical model that is proposed.Keywords
