Abstract
Descriptive statistical methods are used to describe characteristics of Hibolithes arkelli arkelli and a series of graphs and diagrams illustrate ranges of variation. Graphical techniques are unsuitable for some features and traditional descriptive methods supported by numerical data are utilised instead. Three separate components of variation are identified: phylogenie, ontogenic, and intrinsic; others may be present. In many respects Hibolithes arkelli arkelli resembles a Belemnopsis and the development of some of its features appears gradational between the two genera. Although atypical it is best retained in Hibolithes. Keywords
