The Nuclear Spin and Magnetic Moment of Sodium from Hyperfine Structure

Abstract
The hyperfine structure of the sodium D lines from a liquid-air cooled Schüler tube was observed with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Each line has two resolvable components; the separations are: for D2(λ5890), 0.0555 cm1, for D1(λ5896), 0.0612 cm1. The total h.f.s. splitting for the 3S122 state is 0.0583 cm1, for the 3P322 state 0.0050 cm1 and for 3P122 0.0083 cm1. Relative intensity measurements are consistent with a nuclear spin of 32. The nuclear magnetic moment is calculated as 2.71840 Bohr magnetons.
