Abstract
Circulating thyrotropin titers were measured in 5 patients with Graves' disease in whom thyroid function persisted at normal or supranormal levels after total hypophysectomy. Serum TSH levels were found to be in the normal range in thyrotoxic individuals before pituitary ablation. In all cases, blood TSH could not be detected after hypophysectomy. It is concluded that hyperplasia and hypersecretion of the thyroid in Graves' disease are not primarily attributable to change in levels of thyrotropin in the circulation
