Abstract
The paper‐‐an abbreviated version of the author's Conference address‐‐argues that we are in the midst of a learning revolution with which all of us, academics and students alike, must come to terms. The lecture and the printed word, as the sole means of communication in tertiary education for the large percentage of teachers and students, may be challenged. As student needs diversify, teachers will no longer be able to function using traditional skills but will need to develop new skills. It should be their duty to acquire these skills before they begin a life time of teaching
