Abstract
The coccolith-bearing phase of Pleurochrysis scherffelii has been examined with the electron microscope for the first time. Coccolith and scale structure, haptonema morphology, and the microanatomy of the protoplast have been recorded and shown to agree closely with those of Hymenomonas carterae and the Hymenomonas stage of Apistonema previously investigated by the present author. Comparative observations have been made on the vegetative phase and non-coccolith-bearing swarmers of Pleurochrysis scherffelii and these differ significantly in scale morphology from the coccolith-bearing phase although the haptonema of the swarmers is similar. Certain developmental observations have been included in the investigation and the taxonomic significance of the findings is discussed in a preliminary way.
