Abstract
In July 1989 the author was awarded the first doctorate from a Women's Studies Department in the UK. As a mature student with no previous background in academia the author reflects upon that experience. The opportunity to participate in a Women's Studies course was very important to her both personally and academically. In talking with women students she believes that such courses can be highly significant in intellectual development and personal growth and as such should be an integral part of higher and continuing education.
