Changes in Total Serum Ca++, Na+, and K+ with Administration of Succinylcholine

Abstract
Succinylcholine administration (i.v.) effects during surgical anesthesia on serum Ca2+, K+ and Na+ electrolytes are monitored in randomly selected patients. Hyperkalemic effects are not statistically significant. Succinylcholine is reported to cause significant hypocalcemia following inhalational enflurane or i.v. thiopental induction. Rise in intracellular Ca2+, decreasing serum Ca2+ is attributed to active transport or a concentration gradient created by membrane depolarization effects of succinylcholine.
