Abstract
Induced resistance (tolerance) to the pyrogenic effect of endotoxins has been studied in rabbits by means that permit a clear differentiation of at least two mechanisms that produce the same clinical signs. Within 24 hr after a single sublethal dose of endotoxin, animals showed marked tolerance with no interendotoxin specificity. This early tolerance did not seem to be associated with any humoral factor and could not be transferred passively. If the endotoxin was strongly immunogenic, a late form of tolerance, specific for the endotoxin employed, developed coincidentally with the production of O antibody; sera from animals with this type of resistance could passively transfer tolerance to normal recipients. These findings suggest that late tolerance to pyrogen may be a manifestation of anaphylaxis, but evidence for such a mechanism has not been obtained. Keywords
