Atypical teratoma (pinealoma)

Abstract
Clinical and pathologic studies of 2 cases of atypical teratoma (pinealoma) are presented. Both patients exhibited symptoms and signs suggesting meningoencephalitis. In the first case, despite extensive neoplastic involvement of the brain, including hypothalamus, and of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, the only recognized endocrine disturbance was a latent diabetes mellitus. In the second case, in which the tumor occupied the frontal lobes chiefly but did not invade the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, there was evidence of hypopituitarism. Possible pathophysiologic mechanisms are discussed briefly.
