Abstract
Tumors arising from the carotid body have received extensive consideration in the medical and surgical literatures. Wilson (1) recently estimated that approximately 500 cases have been reported in the past 70 years. There is no general agreement as to whether the tumors are benign or malignant and whether surgical removal should be carried out in all cases. It is also of interest that several cases of chemodectomas, the group to which carotid body tumors certainly belong, have been reported to secrete norepinephrine (2-5).
