Abstract

Tests of the manipulative behavior of infant rhesus monkeys in a series of problems measuring manipulatory motivation and proficiency showed the amount and efficiency of manipulation to increase with age and practice. It is suggested that "manipulatory behavior is self-sustaining and is not dependent upon, nor derived from, internal drives such as hunger or thirst, or their incentive systems.".
