Abstract
One of the main barriers to effective care of the long term mentally ill is the poor compliance of many patients with their prescribed medication regimes. This paper reviews a pilot study of a programme designed to improve medication compliance, using a brief package originally inspired by, and adapted from, the principles of motivational interviewing. As compared to controls, patients receiving the Medication Self-Management (MSM) intervention showed changes in attitudes towards medication and insight into illness in the desired direction, but these changes failed to reach statistical significance. Possible reasons for this failure are discussed, and a modified package, to be tested in a further study, is described.
