Abstract
I can still remember my first meeting with Dr. Garland, which took place in his office on the Fenway, in April 1952. I was on my first visit to the United States as a traveling fellow and, having been editor of a small medical journal that had literally died under my care, I had the temerity to pay a courtesy call upon the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine.
