Abstract
The term ‘institution’ can be defined as the coming together of separate parts in the service of a common task and the structure that arises as a consequence of this process. The structure referred to could be either in the mind (a state of mind, for example), in writing (a constitution or management structure), or in building and land, or in a combination of any of these. Institutional dynamics then refers to the process of relating the various component parts as well as the consequences of this dynamic for the institution and its environment. The term refers not to the conscious traffic of institutional functioning but specifically to the unconscious and hence unacknowledged factors at play. By and large these are factors that interfere with the functioning of the institution.
